McKercher, Margaret L. (1929-)

Born on April 17, 1929, much of Peggy McKercher’s career has revolved around community leadership in Saskatoon. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, McKercher was the first woman to be elected to Corman Park municipality. She played an important role in establishing the Meewasin Valley Authority, an organization designed to preserve the Saskatchewan River Valley environment. One result of her work as the Authority’s first chairperson was the creation of the Wanuskewin Heritage Park in 1982 to its official opening a decade later. McKercher was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995, the same year she accepted the chancellorship of the University of Saskatchewan. She received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2001.
