Rao, Kris (1932-2000)

Kris Rao, November 1977.
Linda Holoboff (Saskatchewan Archives Board) S-SP-A7776-1, Saskatoon StarPhoenix fonds

Kris Rao was born in Sina, Mysore, India, on August 2, 1932. He graduated from Stanley Medical College in Madras, where he married a fellow medical student, Leela Leelavathi. After completion of their internships they left India and obtained residency positions in Middletown, Connecticut - Kris in Radiology and Leela in Pathology. He did his final years of radiology in Saskatoon and spent his professional career with Associated Radiologists in that city. Kris was a tireless volunteer, giving of his time and expertise to local, national and international charities - including short stints with MEDICO-CARE in Afghanistan. He was a founder of the first Hindu temple in Saskatoon. Rao believed we all have a responsibility to give back to our community and country some of the benefits we have received; this he did in full measure. He received a number of honours, the greatest being the Order of Canada in 1992. He died during a visit to India on January 10, 2000.
