Cipywnyk, Dmytro (1927-2003)

Dmytro Cipywnyk was born on a farm near Brooksby on April 15, 1927. He obtained his MSc at McGill University and his MD from the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) in 1963, before becoming a Psychiatry Fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He taught psychiatry at the U of S from 1971 to 1992, and was medical director of the Saskatchewan Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission from 1983 to 1992. He was also president of the Saskatchewan and National Councils of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and of the Ukrainian World Congress. He chaired the Advisory Committee on Saskatchewan-Ukraine relations and co-chaired the Prairie Centre for Ukrainian Heritage. He was president of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council, and sat on the U of S Senate and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. Appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1992, he also received an honorary doctorate in Canon Law from St. Andrew's College, Winnipeg in 1995, and received the Order “For Merit” of Ukraine in 2002. Cipywnyk died in Saskatoon on March 9, 2003.
