Worobetz, Stephen (1914-2006)

Recognized for his exemplary service to both his province and country, the Honourable Dr. Stephen Worobetz was born in Krydor on December 26, 1914, and educated at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. He served as a medical officer with the Canadian Army in World War II and was awarded the Military Cross for his courageous actions during the Italian campaign. Following the war, he practiced as a family physician in Saskatoon and later completed post-graduate work in Winnipeg and Philadelphia to be a general surgeon. In 1970, Dr. Worobetz was the first person of Ukrainian origin appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan. He occupied the vice-regal post for six years and returned to the medical profession until his retirement in 1982. Dr. Worobetz’s philanthropic work included the creation of the Stephen and Michelene Worobetz Foundation in 1989, which encouraged volunteerism and supported charitable organizations. For his dedication throughout the years, Dr. Worobetz received an honorary doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1993. He received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1999. Stephen Worobetz died on February 2, 2006.
