Nixon, Howard R. (1928-)

Born in 1951, a strong advocate of fitness and physical education, Howard Nixon of Saskatoon excelled as an athlete at the University of British Columbia where he earned his BPE in 1951. He continued to promote athletics at the varsity level as a coach and educator at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1965, Nixon established the Provincial Youth Agency, known today as the Saskatchewan Department of Youth, Culture & Recreation. He also helped create , a national youth program that has encouraged personal, social, and professional development of over 20,000 young people. Nixon has sat on numerous boards and councils regarding sports and physical activity. Inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1987, Howard Nixon was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000.
