One of Canada's best women's ice hockey players, Hayley Wickenheiser was born in Shaunavon on August 12, 1978. She first played hockey on boys' teams and later joined a girls' peewee league after the Wickenheiser family moved to Calgary in 1990. At age 15, she joined the Canadian women's national hockey team that won four gold medals at the 1994, 1997, 1999, and 2000 World Championships. The team also collected the silver medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics before winning gold at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Wickenheiser is also a talented softball player and was a member of the Canadian women's softball team that participated in the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. She became the second Canadian woman to compete in both a summer and winter Olympiad. Wickenheiser is an advocate for women and girls in sport and speaks on the subject around the country.
