Born on April 13, 1917, prairie history expert Lewis H. Thomas was noted for his contributions to research, writing, and teaching in both Saskatchewan and Alberta. He was Provincial Archivist of Saskatchewan, Associate Professor of History at the University of Regina, and Professor of History at the University of Alberta. Awards recognizing his work include an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Saskatchewan (1972), the American Association for State and Local History's Award of Merit, and life membership in the Canadian Historical Association. On October 5, 1983, Thomas was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada. He died on November 22, 1983.
