Table SE-1. SaskEnergy-Contribution to Saskatchewans Economy, 2003
SaskEnergy provides natural gas transmission and distribution services across the province. It does not own natural gas reserves, but purchases supplies from independent producers. The corporation’s roots are in SaskPower, which was designated as the provincial authority for natural gas distribution in 1951. SaskEnergy assumed that responsibility in 1988 when it was created as a separate Crown corporation to provide Saskatchewan people with a reliable, safe and economical source of energy. Today SaskEnergy provides natural gas service to more than 325,000 residential, farm, commercial and industrial customers in the province. Since 1992, it has invested $750 million in capital spending projects to extend natural gas service to more rural and remote communities, and to upgrade its infrastructure. SaskEnergy has seven wholly owned subsidiaries: TransGas collects natural gas from producers and transports it either to pipelines for export or to SaskEnergy for distribution to customers; Many Islands Pipe Lines transports natural gas interprovincially and internationally; Bayhurst Gas holds natural gas royalty interests; SaskEnergy International is involved in international consulting; Swan Valley Gas Corporation distributes natural gas in western Manitoba; Saskatchewan First Call Corporation operates a database of pipeline locations for use by landowners and others; and 6019021 Canada Inc. holds an interest in a natural gas distribution franchise in Nova Scotia.
