SPMC was founded under the Crown Corporations Act in 1986 and continued under its own act in 1987. Its mandate is to provide commercial support services to government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions of the government. The intent is to maximize value and gain economies of scale by serving the needs of one major client: the Saskatchewan government. SPMC has four main service lines: accommodation, commercial, information technology, and corporate support. Accommodation services own, lease, maintain, build, furnish and provide security for office space and buildings around the province, including Crown corporation buildings, service centres, and provincial parks. Commercial services provide vehicles, executive air travel, purchasing services (particularly office, medical, and janitorial supplies), sales and salvage, postal services, warehouse and distribution, records management, relocation services, and conference facilities at the Echo Valley Conference Centre. Corporate Support services offer communication, human resources, legal, investigative, risk management, and insurance services. The new Information Technology line maintains all government internal web-based information, e-mail, telecommunications, and computer support. To provide this support, SPMC works closely with the private sector to source supplies, negotiate contracts, provide maintenance, and present expertise in architecture, engineering and construction.
