Born in England on February 13, 1917, Frederick William Johnson was a distinguished representative of the Crown, the province, and its people. He began his education at the Regina Normal School and later served with the Canadian Army in World War II. In 1949, he received his law degree from the University of Saskatchewan. Johnson was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1963 and to the Court of Queen’s Bench in 1965, serving as its Chief Justice from 1977 to 1983. He continued to represent the Crown as the sixteenth Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan from 1983 to 1988, making him the first chancellor of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. An honorary colonel of the 10th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, Johnson was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990 and received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit one year later. He died on June 20, 1993.
