An outstanding female judoist, Nancy Jewitt-Filteau was born in Swift Current on April 3, 1962. Raised in Webb, Saskatchewan, she moved to Saskatoon and was a member of the University of Saskatchewan Judo Club. Jewitt-Filteau competed at her first national senior judo championship in 1978 and won her first Canadian title in 1980. In total, she won three gold and four silver medals at national competitions. She was also a gold medalist at the 1987 Western Canada Summer Games held in Regina. In international events, Jewitt-Filteau earned a silver medal at the 1983 Pan-American Games in Venezuela, and a gold at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. After failing to qualify for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, she retired and operated her own judo club at the University of Saskatchewan. Jewitt-Filteau was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, but later decided to return to competition. She won a silver medal at the US Open in Colorado, and a bronze at the 1995 Pan-American Games in Argentina. She earned a spot on the Canadian Olympic judo team and participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. She was eliminated from competition with a record of one win and two loses. Shortly after, she retired once again.
