An exceptionally talented trapshooter, George Genereux was born in Saskatoon on March 1, 1935. As a teenager, he won numerous provincial, national, and international trapshooting titles. At the Grand American Trap Shoot in Vandalia, Ohio, Genereux captured the 1951 Junior Clay Target Championship, the 1952 Junior Champion of Champions title, and the 1956 Champion of Champions crown. This latter achievement made him the first Canadian to win a major championship at such a prestigious event. In 1951, he was a silver medalist in world championship competition at Oslo, Norway. The pinnacle of his amateur career came at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he claimed the gold medal in the trapshooting event. Following his departure from the shooting world, Genereux earned a doctorate in medicine from McGill University; he later worked as a radiologist at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Genereux is a member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and was an original inductee to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1966. He died in Saskatoon on April 10, 1989.
