The trail between Fort à la Corne and Cumberland House was an important alternative travel route for the two posts during the winter months. During the summer the North Saskatchewan River provided an important means of conveyance between Cumberland House, the oldest settlement in Saskatchewan (1774), and Fort à la Corne, established near the North and South Saskatchewan River forks in 1753. However, when the river froze each winter, travelers between the two posts relied on the Fort à la Corne-Cumberland House Trail. The trail generally followed the North Saskatchewan River east of the forks for more than 200 km to Cumberland House.
