Bioriginal Food & Science Corp. has grown from a Saskatoon company selling bee pollen in 1993 to become the world's leading supplier of Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) oils. Bioriginal was built on science and is recognized as an industry pioneer with more than 200 products now available through a distribution network on six continents from offices in Canada, China and Europe. The company, which employs almost 100 people, obtains its raw materials from flax, evening primrose, borage, black currants and fish. Merchandise ranges from bulk oil and capsules to finished, manufactured products. The extensive product lines serve five key markets: nutritional supplements, functional foods, cosmetics, pet and veterinary products and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. Products are exported from Canada to customers in countries such as Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Taiwan and the United States. Bioriginal has a sophisticated resource management system that ensures product traceability and is registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in compliance with the United States Bioterrorism Act. The company received the 2003 ABEX Business of the Year Award as well as the ABEC Export Award. The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Achievement in Business Excellence Awards (ABEX). Bioriginal also was named a Canadian Innovation Leader by the National Research Council in 2003.
