Kenneth King, born January 26, 1952 in the Davidson Union Hospital, was raised in Hanley, Saskatchewan. Upon graduation from Hanley High School in 1970, King moved to Prince George, B.C. where he began his successful newspaper career. In 1977 with a move to the Edmonton Journal, King began a series of executive positions in the newspaper world including: General Manager of the Edmonton Sun, General Manager of United Press Canada, President and Publisher of the Calgary Sun, and Western Vice President of the Toronto Sun Publishing Corporation. His newspaper career culminated in 1996 with his appointment as Publisher and President of the Calgary Herald, and in 1999 with appointment as President and Publisher of The Vancouver Sun and The Province (Vancouver). During his newspaper career King was acknowledged for strong community leadership and growth for the papers.
In 2001 King was named to his “dream job,” President and CEO of the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames; he is also President and CEO of the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League.
King’s community involvement ranges from activities with the Rotary Club, the Calgary Sport Tourism Authority, the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, to REACH, a multimillion-dollar medical fundraising project. King has received an Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding contributions to the province of Alberta, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal for community service, and the commemorative medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. In 1991, King was honored as B’Nai Brith Man of the Year.
Ken King and his wife Marilyn are the parents of two daughters.
