Roney, Keith (1948-)

Lawn bowling champion Keith Roney was born in Regina on February 11, 1948. He grew up in Bulyea, Saskatchewan, where he played fastball, curling, and hockey. After graduating with a degree in biology from the University of Regina, Roney began working at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in 1971; today, he is the museum's curator of Life Sciences. Roney began his lawn bowling career in 1979 with the Regina Lawn Bowling Club. In 1985, he played one year with the Canadian team, and in 1987 won his first Canadian championship. He was invited again to join the Canadian team in 1988, and continues to play with them. Roney plays in the singles, pairs, triples, and fours divisions of both the national and the provincial teams. He has competed and won several times in the North American challenge and the US Open. Roney has played all over the world, including in two World Bowls, two Commonwealth Games, three tournaments in Hong Kong, and five Asia Pacific Bowls Championships. Roney's biggest success came when playing in the pairs division in the 2004 Men's World Bowls Championship in Ayr, Scotland: it was the first time Canada had won gold in that division.
