Hallam, Donald George (1942-2001)

Born on October 27, 1942, Don Hallam was a lifelong resident of Regina, where he attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Campion College High School. His father, who was recording secretary of the United Transportation Union (UTU) from 1924 to 1967, taught him the values and principles of trade unionism. While still attending high school, Hallam began working part-time at Sherwood Co-op and later became a full-time employee. During this period, he was active in the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), and in 1965 was hired as a RWDSU representative. Hallam was a strong social activist who fought for many causes in a dedicated and humorous way. He was active with a Catholic social action group in the early 1960s in support of California farm workers, promoted union history and global peace and, along with Regina city councilor Joe McKeown, raised money to replace the Peace Pole at Grant Road School, which had been vandalized. Don Hallam died on December 29, 2001.
