Gordon Currie has been an inspiration to youth both as educator and coach. Born in Semans, Saskatchewan on May 20, 1923, Currie began his teaching career at Balfour Technical School, where he also coached the Football team. Over fourteen years, Currie led the Balfour Redmen to nine city championships, eight southern Saskatchewan titles, and eight provincial titles. He also coached the school’s Hockey team to three provincial championships. In 1965, Currie joined the Regina Rams football club as head coach. During his tenure with the junior team, he guided his players to six national titles in twelve seasons. In 1975, he was named the Canadian amateur coach of the year. He retired as Rams’ head coach following the 1976 campaign, having amassed a record of 108 wins in 135 games. Gordon Currie returned to teaching at Balfour before becoming principal of Campbell Collegiate. In 1982 he was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly, and served as Minister in several portfolios from 1982 to 1985. A Member of the Order of Canada since 1979, his many honours and awards include the establishment of the Gordon Currie Foundation, membership in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, and an honorary degree from the University of Regina.
