Peter Zakreski was born on June 28, 1939. Dedicated to the city of Saskatoon, he has received several awards for his community service and volunteering efforts. He helped coordinate the 1979 Western Canada Summer Games, the 1989 Jeux Canada Games and the 1991 World Junior Hockey Championships hosted by Saskatoon. Zakreski also served as an alderman for six years. He has been awarded the Canada 125 Medal, the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Humanitarian Award, and the Order of Canada in 2002.
