Born on June 17, 1942, Margaret Mueller (née Robb) was the first of many Saskatoon speed skaters to achieve national and international success. Winner of four Saskatchewan and five Alberta provincial speed skating titles, Mueller was also a seven-time national champion. She represented Canada at the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in Squaw Valley, California, where she competed in the 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 3,000-metre events. As a student at the University of Saskatchewan, Mueller continued to skate but also branched off into basketball and diving, winning three provincial diving championships. She was a member of six intervarsity teams, and received the 1964 Spirit of Youth award for leadership, academic achievement, and sportsmanship. Mueller attended graduate school in Madison, Wisconsin, where she coached state championship teams in track and field, basketball, and volleyball. In recognition of her contributions to amateur athletics, she was inducted to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
