The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan is a non-profit organization established in 1971 (The Legal Profession Act, 1990, Sec. 74–79). Its purposes are legal education, legal research, legal aid, law libraries and law reform. Funds are derived from interest on lawyers’ mixed trust accounts. This monetary procedure for dealing with funds held in trust was made law in 1971, and is presently governed by the Legal Profession Act, 1990. The Law Foundation membership consists of the Minister of Justice or his/her designate, two people appointed by the Minister (at least one of whom must not be a Law Society member), and four members of the Law Society appointed by the benchers. Originating in Australia in 1967, the concept of Law Foundations was next initiated in British Columbia in 1969, and in Saskatchewan in 1971.
