The name given to the Great Plains of North America, including the southern prairies of Canada, that suffered ecological devastation throughout the 1930s. High prices for wheat and the needs associated with World War I caused farmers to cultivate land formerly used only for grazing. The soil, disturbed by plows and parched by drought, blew away in immense clouds of dust.
