Arthur Covington was born in Regina on September 21, 1913. After graduate education, he was employed at the National Research Council in Ottawa as an astronomer from 1946 until his retirement. He studied the cycle of solar activity, and made the first Canadian measurements of microwave emissions by sunspots relative to the rest of the sun. He established a long-term study of solar radiowave activity and solar flares which enhanced the prediction of the interruptions of long-range radio and other transmissions. His work expanded the activities of Canadian astronomers and enhanced the reputation of Canadian scientific research in the period after World War II. Covington died on March 17, 2001.
