Nellie Carson, born in Yorkton in 1900, was the first woman in Saskatchewan to receive her commercial pilot's license: on October 12, 1929, she qualified for her license and immediately marked the occasion by breaking a new altitude record of 16,000 feet without an oxygen mask. Grace Hutchinson became the next female pilot to receive her license in the province, qualifying immediately after Carson on the same day. Nellie Carlson died on July 11, 1949, and is buried in Saskatoon's Woodlawn Cemetery.
