First Nations, settlers, merchants, and traders used this trail well into the late 19th century. The trail's northern terminus was Fort Battleford; its southern terminus was the junction of the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan rivers, approximately 25 km west of present-day Leader, Saskatchewan. The trail stretched for more than 200 km over southern prairie and parkland, linking the North and South Saskatchewan river systems. It was used extensively until the turn of the century, when surveyed roads replaced wagon trails throughout the province.
