Waskewitch, Gus (1917-96)

Born on January 11, 1917, Gus Waskewitch of Onion Lake dedicated over three decades of his life to mentorship and development in his community. He established the Onion Lake School and the Eskweskeet Rehabilitation Centre. Waskewitch also spoke to youth about alcohol and drug addictions, and developed a counselling program. Additionally, he served as a Senator with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and as a member of the Onion Lake Council of Elders. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1988. He died on November 7, 1996.
