Mitchell, Charles Stuart (1909-86)

An authority in rural municipal affairs, Charles Mitchell was born in Preeceville on April 5, 1909. He became interested in community activities at an early age and was first elected to the Rural Municipality of Preeceville in 1957. Three years later, he joined the executive of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) and subsequently served as vice-president and president. Mitchell’s leadership role in SARM led to several other commitments on rural executives, councils, and boards such as the provincial Advisory Council on Transportation. In addition, he was an active member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for over four decades and was instrumental in establishing the Sturgis Co-operative Farm in 1944. Charles Mitchell received the Order of Canada in 1979. He died on January 9, 1986.
