Lewry, Louis H. (1919-92)

Born in Moose Jaw on April 16, 1919, Louis H. “Scoop” Lewry’s career as a public servant included alderman and mayor of Moose Jaw and member of Parliament. Before entering politics, he worked as a reporter for Moose Jaw’s CHAB radio, the Regina Leader-Post , and the now-defunct . First elected to Moose Jaw city council in 1948, Lewry served as mayor of Moose Jaw from 1949–56, 1964–70, and 1982–88. He was also elected CCF member of Parliament for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre in 1957. In addition to his four decades in public life, Scoop Lewry was a passionate coin collector and served as president of the Canadian Numismatic Association from 1987 to 1989. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1980. Lewry died on February 24, 1992.
