Cohen, Saul (1921-2008)

Saul Cohen was born in Toronto on January 29, 1921. He came to Saskatchewan in 1946 following medical service in the Canadian Army, and was in family practice in Melville until he moved to Regina in 1954. In 1959 he became a consultant to the Bureau on Alcoholism and continued his teaching and research in the field. Dr Cohen was a founder of the Physicians at Risk Committee, the author of the Physician’s Manual on Alcoholism, and a charter member of the teaching program on chemical dependencies at the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. He was chairman of the board of the Saskatchewan Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. He was named Fellow of the College of Family Medicine of Canada. In 1986 he was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and senior life memberships in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and in the Canadian Medical Association. Dr. Cohen, through his publications, research, practice and counselling, placed Saskatchewan in the forefront of alcohol and drug abuse treatment and rehabilitation. He retired to Toronto. As of March 10, 2004, he was active as a medical consultant, two days a week, at an addiction centre in Mississauga, Ontario. Dr. Saul Cohen passed away in June 2008.
