Bowman, Lillie (1894-1969)

Born in Ontario on October 16, 1894, Lillie Bowman came to Saskatoon in 1909. She married Aden Bowman, Pioneer businessman and city councillor (1941-52); they had four children. As city councilor from 1955 to 1964, she served on several boards: police commission, transit (as chair), parks and recreation, municipal library, hospital, and assessment. She was also on the housing and centennial committees, and involved with the Playgrounds Association. While councillor she supported construction of the Mendel Art Gallery and of new municipal buildings. She also served on the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association executive. Bowman was a board member for the Salvation Army, YMCA, and Saskatoon Branch of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Concerned about victims of addiction, she was a director of the Saskatoon Alcoholism Association, led the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and helped establish Hope Haven (Saskatoon). Other interests included Bethany Hospital, United Church Women's Missionary Society, Saskatoon Council of Women, and the Board of Trade industrial promotion committee. In 1963 Bowman was recipient of the Saskatoon Quota Club Woman of the Year Award. She died on August 21, 1969.
